Q. What is the best time of year to visit Cairns?
A. Our favourite months are from January through to December.
Q. How big is Cairns and is it an easy place to drive in?
A. Cairns has a population of 120,000 which is spread along a picturesque coastal strip from Palm Cove beach in the North to the farming community of Gordonvale in the South. Driving is very easy by European and North American standards and is generally conducted at a relaxed pace. Beyond the rainforest fringed mountain ranges west of Cairns lies the verdant Atherton Tableland area - a prehistoric volcanic region that is now home to rich farming communities and picturesque rainforest waterfalls. Further West again is where the true outback spirit of Australia begins. To truly see the best of North Queensland, we recommend hiring a car and getting off the beaten track. We’re happy to suggest an itinerary that suits your pace.
Q. Are children welcome at Zanzoo Retreat?
A. Yes they are. All we ask is that respect is shown towards our other guests.
Q. Can you swim in the ocean?
A. Yes you can, however it is wise to swim in stinger enclosures at patrolled beaches between the months of November & April. You can swim at the Great Barrier Reef & freshwater pools like Crystal Cascades all year round.
Q. Are pets allowed?
A. No.
Q. Are there kitchen facilities at Zanzoo?
A. Yes, there is a fully equipped kitchen and poolside BBQ area available for guests use at all times.
Q. Can you recommend any good local restaurants?
A. Where to start? We LOVE our food! And we love to share our latest favourite restaurants with guests. We have both traveled extensively and believe that one of the best parts of traveling is enjoying the local cuisine and way of life. Whatever you feel like - from seafood to Asian style - we can recommend a restaurant that won’t feel like a “tourist trap”
Q. How long will it take me to drive to Cairns?
A. Australia is VAST! Approximate driving times are a guide only. Road conditions are not comparable to Europe or America. In some cases, the main road is only a dirt track.
- Cairns to Brisbane: 24 hours non stop - an arduous drive
- Cairns to Townsville: 4 hours along the picturesque coastal strip most of the way. Allow a whole day.
- Cairns to Darwin: 2 days via Mt Isa. Long and boring - you should definitely fly.
- Cairns to Cooktown: 6 hours but allow a whole day.
- Cairns to Sydney: 48 hours non stop. Don’t even think about it, unless you have at least 2 weeks to do it comfortably.
Q. I am only in Cairns for 2 days. What should I do?
A. Don’t leave without seeing the Great Barrier Reef and taking a trip on Skyrail. No matter how many days you are visiting our region for, we are more than happy to make suggestions on how to get the most out of your time here. Please ask us for more information - marc@zanzoo.com
Q. Do I need to bring any diving or snorkeling equipment?
A. No. Not unless you are really attached to your own extra special equipment. Most day trips to the reef include the use of snorkeling and dive equipment in the price of their fare.
